4 courses launched in 15 months

APM Group in conjunction with the House of PMO created four training courses and exams, targeting the various stages in a Project / Programme Management Office (PMO) practitioner’s career. Unlike other certifications available for PMO professionals, which explain how to design and create PMOs, these four courses targeted a gap in the market and focus on developing individuals.

Who's involved

House of PMO

The House of PMO is a membership body for PMO professionals - where they can develop themselves, support the development of others and contribute to the development of the profession. The House of PMO brings PMO practitioners together through conferences, seminars, virtual and in-person collaboration, publications, and now qualifications.

The results

House of PMO wanted to create a suite of specialist PMO certifications to offer to their members and those within the profession.

The House of PMO founders' personal experiences of working within PMOs, had seen them attend Project Management training and then return to the workplace and try and figure out which aspects of this training applied to their roles. House of PMO had also noted that despite the explosion of project management training in the last few decades, there has been decidedly few for PMO professionals.

House of PMO choose APMG to develop these certifications because:

  • We have the infrastructure to support a global market
  • We have the expertise in the development and management of exams
  • Our independent and trusted authority enhanced the credibility of the certifications.

To develop the four House of PMO certifications, an APMG project manager was responsible for the end-to-end management of the project including creating project plans, managing the budget, overseeing risk and ensuring that all the elements including syllabus, training materials and exams are tested and delivered to APMG’s high quality standards.

The three source materials the training was based on was reviewed to determine the key topics which would help PMO professionals learn and improve. Based on these key topics, documentation like training materials, was created to ensure that all training organisations would provide consistent quality training. As the House of PMO had never written examination questions before, APMG’s Chief Examiner offered support and guidance.

In parallel to the development of the certifications themselves, APMG provided marketing support to help the House of PMO market this new training to potential training providers and learners.

As a result, just 15 months after the journey began there are four new certifications helping PMO professionals succeed in their roles.

Having worked within the training industry for many years, we understood the various certification options, and were looking for a partner who had the infrastructure to support a global market, provide expertise in the development and management of questions and exam papers, and carried a reputation that would enhance the credibility of the certifications – APMG fitted the bill!
